Throughout the years, I've lived online and in real life with a lot of people from the UK and USA. I just mimicked their phrasal constructions, paid attention to where they put certain words and how they changed them, and that was mostly it! I don't remember ever studying English grammar and I learned it through real experience with the language, like all kids do with their mother tongue.

Since the continents split up a looooong time ago and multiple varieties of human beings appeared, it would be natural for diversification to occur. But, if you look closely, you'll see that all languages have things in common, like verbs, adjectives, nouns, etc. Now, if you question was to why we all don't speak the same language at the XXI century, I would argue that it is for the sake of protecting our respective cultures from cultural domination by other cultures. And language, as we all can see with american English, plays a decisive role in this.

There are lots of good reasons to learn a second language. You can learn a little bit if you go away on holiday or want to move somewhere and find work (I personally am from the UK but have learned Thai since I live in Thailand). Or you could learn so that you have more skills since it can help in businesses that deal with overseas customers or suppliers. Learning another language can also help with a number of other thinking skills and give a better understanding of your native language.

English used to be the second-most common language, but Spanish-speakers have increased much more rapidly over the past 20 years. Still, scholars have named English the world's “most influential language,” due to the number of speakers.

As for which is easier, I can only say that Ukrainian is somewhat easier phonetically (at least, for speakers of English and most other European languages) because it contains fewer soft consonants than Russian, therefore the pronunciation is easier to master.
