The meaning of modal verb "deber" changes depending on whether it is used in the affirmative or negative form. In an affirmative sentence, deber indicates that something is obligatory (Debo tomar mi medicación - I have to take my medication). However, in a negative sentence, it expresses that something is not recommendable (No debes dejar a un niño solo - You shouldn't leave a kid alone).
