This quite special holiday is among the most popular and loved holidays across the globe.
It is celebrated at the end of October, and it’s the time of the year to dress up as scary as possible.
Did you know that at least half of the world population celebrates this holiday every year?
You've certainly guessed which holiday we are talking about.
Yes, it Is Halloween!
Even if there are some countries where this holiday is not present, almost everyone in the world is familiar with the concept of Halloween.
On October 31, people dress up as ghosts, witches, monsters, etc. to look scary.
While it is now associated with costumes, pumpkins, and scary movies, it is also known as Alhalloween, All Hallows' Eve or All Saints' Eve, over the centuries it evolved from pagan rituals through the ancient Celtic holiday of Samhain to today's kids' ( and adults, too!) favorite holiday.
Kids also dress up in various costumes and go from door to door, mainly in groups, with their friends, and ask for candies followed by this famous sentence: Trick or Treat.
But what does it mean?
The Trick or treat is a phrase aiming to get a treat (usually candy), and if one doesn't give anything, children will then perform a Trick, which is usually some kind of mischief.
Don't forget the pumpkins, the inevitable pumpkins. It is a leading symbol of Halloween from the days of Celts, then carving faces into vegetables (mainly pumpkins), to light the way for the good spirits.
From those times until today, we carve scary faces on pumpkins and put them on our porches, to scare off evil and bad spirits.
So, this year, make sure you have a proper costume, the scarier, the better, and also learn to wish a happy Halloween in a language you are learning.
Or you can learn how to say it in 10 different languages that you like the most… or you can learn in Asian languages… or… well, it's not essential to pick the one you prefer from the following list.
