What is a language? A system of sounds and symbols which have their own meanings, right? Well, does that qualify internet slang as a language?
Not really, but internet slang takes its own respectable place in communication through social media and computer games. Let us look at some of the best examples of internet slang.
1. LOL – laughing out loud (lol, do you really mean that?)
2. GG – good game! – used in computer games at the end of a game – (GG, son!)
3. Dafuq – what the fuck?
4. IMHO – in my humble opinion
5. IRL – in real life – used to indicate the difference between the internet realm and real life (come fight me IRL!)
6. NSFW – not safe for work (this video is NSFW)
7. OMG – oh my God! (OMG, is that a cockroach?)
8. tl;dr – too long, didn’t read
9. YOLO – you only live once – an old, but gold phrase.
10. CYA – see you!
11. IDK – I don’t know
12. LMAO – laughing my ass off! (occasionally spelled “lmfao” indicating the word “fucking” in order to amplify the meaning)
13. Noob – newbie – game slang, a new player.
14. NVM – nevermind (nvm, I don’t care)
15. IDC – I don’t care (nvm, idc)
16. OFC – of course
17. ROFL – rolling on the floor laughing (can be used in combination with “lmao” – roflmao/roflmfao)
18. STFU – shut the fuck up!
19. GTFO – get the fuck out
20. GL – good luck! (often with HF – GLHF)
I am certain there are many more example which I am forgetting. Writing whole sentences using the internet slang is not too far from reality.
So, imho, ofc, this was a good post, lol. And if not, idc, lol. GL!
