Hello, my name is Saleh Seddik, and I am an English, Arabic, and Spanish speaker. I am originally from Cairo, Egypt. I have worked as a professional freelance translator for over five years, but my love for learning foreign languages, in general, has a life-long history. Languages have been a great subject in my life. As a student of languages, I'm obsessed with how it determines our identities and the way it permits us to describe ourselves. I moved to live in Barcelona, Spain, in 2018 for the sake of learning more languages. I decided to be a translator, although I studied International Relations and Political Science. I've also participated in several projects around Europe, giving training and workshops about non-formal education and teaching English and Arabic to young people. I also have several other initiatives regarding teaching languages with gamification and non-formal educational methods. Me as a teacher: I love teaching because I can be who I am when I do it. I have been teaching Arabic to non-native speakers for five years now. I have worked with students from different nationalities with a wide variety of cultures. That has made me understand people from different parts of the world better. I have had lots of students from beginner to advanced levels, and I always structure my lessons depending on the needs of each student. I respect all my students, and I try to encourage and motivate them by giving them a lot of praise and showing them how fascinating and easy languages are. I started my teaching career in an International Company as we used to have an international crew from different countries. At that time, I was responsible for teaching and giving materials to facilitate learning the language. Also, when I moved to live in Spain, I worked for a year as an Arabic and English teacher for people from different countries. I have travelled around twenty countries working and learning about people’s culture. I believe that language and translations make it possible to break through words and barriers and to hear the voice of the other and be heard. My lessons and teaching style: I have created materials for each level from A1 to C1 with my material and books. I have used these materials to teach grammar, writing, listening, reading, and speaking for many years, and they have proved to be very effective. I also use many tools such as Kahoot, Zoom, Genialy, and Memorize. The lessons adapt tools and materials according to students' needs. I also use YouTube videos, movies, and group discussions to hear how natives speak and express themselves, then we discuss. I also use articles from news websites in case you want to be up to date with what's new in the Arab world and the Arabic language.

What is the most important qualification that you should look out for in choosing a tutor?
Above all else, it's important for you and your tutor to be able to communicate in a common language. It may not be English because the tutor might be fluent in your native tongue, too. But if the tutor you chose is a native speaker of the language you want to learn and isn't fluent with your native language and you know how to speak in English, then make sure he can speak English, too.
What should you expect in learning a language?
Learning a new language takes time, lets you put in a bit more effort and resources to make it work. If you have a specific timeframe that you're following, then you'll need more of the three aspects to learn it. You should also expect that if it's just a bit too difficult for you, then you have to be open to your tutor about your difficulties so that what you've invested on will not go to waste. In that way, your tutor will be able to make adjustments and will help you achieve your goal.
How can you be more effective in learning a language?
Always be attentive in your lessons and when you're done with them, make sure that you are able to practice and apply what you learned. Your tutor will give you tips on how to practice on your own and might give you homework. If the tutor doesn't, then you can ask for it so you can keep practicing off schedule. You always have to help yourself while you're on your own so that when you're already out there and speaking with the locals, it's not that hard to pick up on what you learned anymore.
What factors should you consider in learning a language online?
Learning a language online needs you to invest in a good internet connection, if you don't have any yet, because it's the only way to work with a tutor. You also have to invest your time and if time is difficult to spare, you might as well choose a platform that allows you to choose your own schedule. You also need space, like a quiet room, where you can speak with the tutor and be able to focus on your lessons.
How can you help your language tutor be effective in teaching you?
Always be attentive with what your tutor is teaching you. It's the only way for you to understand and learn easily. Make sure that you follow the schedule that you agreed on or what you choose for yourself if that's how it works. You also have to participate in the activities that your tutor has planned for you because these have been tailored fit with the requirements that you have set. If you are asked to practice during the days when you don't have lessons, you have to religiously do so.
What kind of language tutor should you choose?
It really depends on your learning style. If you think you can learn better if the person is more of someone who teaches professionally then you can find someone who teaches that way. If you're the type who learns while just talking to the teacher, then you can opt for someone who's friendly, enthusiastic and fun but still focusing on the lesson at hand. Always read a tutor's personal introduction so you have a bit of an idea who they are and how they teach.
What's the advantage of hiring a tutor?
It's an advantage to hire a tutor because lessons will be customized for you and you'll be guided in learning them to make it more effective for you. You can easily interact with them and ask them to elaborate if something's not really that clear to you. They will also be able to give you feedback on your progress with your lessons and how far along you are in achieving your goals in learning the language.
How can learning a language benefit me other than being able to communicate with it?
Studies have proved that learning languages can help you with other mental processes as it sharpens your thinking skills. There's significant improvement in your memory, enhances your concentration, it helps you be able to multitask with ease and improves your listening comprehension skills. It also helps you solve problems easily because it enables you to critically be able to think to come up with effective solutions.
What should be your mindset so you can learn a new language easily?
If you already have a particular language in mind because you have goals to achieve, prepare yourself to learn it and be mentally ready to take risks. There will be times that you will struggle but it should always challenge you to work harder and do better. You have to be optimistic and determined that no matter how many obstacles you have, you're still willing to make it happen and be fluent in the language you want to learn.
How important is motivation in learning a language?
Before you decide to learn a new language, you have to be able to answer the question, "Why do you really want to learn?" It could be because you'll get a promotion at work, or for a new relationship, or because you want to get better grades in school and etc. There are many reasons why you want to push yourself to learn.
