In your everyday life, things that you can easily do in your native language like, calling to make an appointment at the doctor, or helping someone with directions. Things we can simply do without thinking about in our native languages, knowing how to get by in the German language can be a wonderful experience.
Knowing some basic German can help you get by with going shopping, as a lot of products and product descriptions are in German, maybe you have an allergy to certain products that you need to be careful of, or buy something by mistake.
Dealing with government documents or letters that you receive in the mail may also be a struggle if you don’t understand some German and may miss something important.
Although many parts of Germany do support other languages, like English. In smaller cities and towns it may be a struggle to find someone who can help if they don’t speak your language.
Germany is home to one of the most powerful economies in Europe, as well as one of the top places to go study or find some kind of employment. In recent years it is becoming even more international but Germany is home to the German language and does have a strong bond towards the language.
If you are going to study in Germany it is best to know at least the B1 level of the German language, in some cases you may need up to C1 level. Even if you chose to study in English, you may realize how important German is when you start searching and applying for jobs.
It may seem that a lot of people have heard of the stereotype of Germans being a little reserved and hard to get past the acquaintance level of friendship. This may be partially true, but a lot of the younger generations of Germans are a lot more welcoming.
The time when a German accepts you as a friend, you have a friend for life. Say “Hallo” next time and speak a little to break the ice, even if you think that your German isn’t great, many Germans will appreciate the effort and your will to learn the language.
There may be a time when you are using a printer or a scanner and it starts beeping at you. Blinking a message that reads something that you don’t understand. What do you do?
Maybe you need to use a computer but instead of “QWERTY” you see “QWERTZ” and extra keys and can’t seem to find the “?” symbol.
In a lot of situations nowadays we have the technology to provide for us, like buying train tickets. You don’t want to make the mistake of buying the wrong ticket or getting on the wrong platform or train.
Since you are learning German, it can open up many doors for traveling, as German is one the most widely spoken countries in Europe. Not only is German the official language of Germany, but also in Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and many more.
It is a great opportunity to get around and travel in Europe and hear the different dialects of the German language and experience different cultures.
