Did you know that the world’s population these days has reached the number of more than 7.8 billion people?

That’s quite a lot.

And did you know that more than half of that number lives in just ten countries worldwide?

Who would say?

Some of you are now probably thinking ‘what’s the point of this information?’ Do we really need to know that? What does that mean for all of us? How can that help us?

Well, the information is vital for language learners. If you know what are the biggest countries in the world by population, you can consider learning their language. The more people speak the language you are learning, the better the chance to practice the language and improve their skills.

So, in the following lines, let’s have a look at what are the 10 countries with the largest population. Perhaps on the list, you may find your favorite country, which can be a sign to start learning its language. Then you can easily find a professional tutor to meet the language, too.

The 10 Biggest Countries in The World By Population

China

Honestly speaking, this isn’t a surprise.

Everyone knows that China, with more than 1.4 billion people, is the most populated country in the world.

This East Asian country is also a proud bearer of the hardest language in the world, the Chinese language.

Interestingly, even though Chinese is considered a language that gives a lot of headache to almost every student, it is still one of the most popular and favorite languages people want to learn.

India

If you want to take a bet that India takes the second place of the most populated country in the world rather than the United States, you should do it because the winner is, undoubtedly, India.

With more than 1.3 billion inhabitants, by the number of people, India is close to China.

As for the language, the situation is quite different.

What would you say, which language is the national language in India? Most of you would probably say Hindi. But you would be wrong.

India is one of the countries that doesn’t have a national language.

After gaining independence in 1942 from the British, the whole country took their task about the official language very seriously.

That’s why, according to the Indian Constitution, there are 22 different languages spoken in India. They are Hindi, Bengali, Maithil, Nepalese, Sanskrit, Tamil, Urdu, Assamese, Dogri, Kannada, Gujarati, Bodo, Manipur, Oriya, Marathi, Santali, Telugu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Malayalam, Konkani, and Kashmiri.

If you look at the languages with different eyes, like linguists and Ethnologue, you should know that there are 453 different languages spoken in India.

The United States

The third place as one of the biggest countries in the world belongs to the United States.

Consisted of 50 states and around 330 million inhabitants the USA is a clear example of how one language can unite so many people.

A synonym for democracy, the modern way of life, for many people the United States is like dreams come true. No wonder why so many people from all over the world speak English and know everything about the USA.

Of course, we mustn’t forget the other recognized and respected Native American languages, such as Navajo, Quechua, and others, and pay respect to their people who are all bi- and polylingual, which is one more reason that shows how people can speak more than one language fluently.

Indonesia

Indonesia is the fourth biggest country by population with around 270 million people.

If you want to know how so many different people can live together in love and peace, you should visit this country and see for yourself.

Made up of chains and thousands of islands, and more than a hundred active volcanos, Indonesia is, indeed, fascinating.

It is also well-known that Indonesia is home to more than 300 different languages.

As for the official language, have you heard how does Bahasa Indonesia sound?

If you still haven’t, we suggest you hear it here.

Oh, and don’t forget about the Javanese because all your language lovers, you will be amazed!

Brazil

And now, let’s get into the place and have a trip to the west.

The fifth most populated country in the world is Brazil. It not only takes fifth place by the population but also by its size. This giant country covers half of the South American continent.

Brazil is one of the most visited countries and one of the top favorite tourist attractions. So, if you are among those who are fascinated by the home of samba, start considering learning Portuguese,  the official and national language of Brazil.

Pakistan

Did you know that besides the number of the population exceeds more than 220 million, it takes sixth place in the world as one of the biggest countries, Pakistan is one of the youngest countries as well? More than 36% of the population is under the age of 15.

Today, the territory of Pakistan is the place and home of several ancient cultures and kingdoms, and dynasties ruled by people of different faiths and cultures.

This country is home to many different languages. Out of the 74 languages, the five most spoken ones are Punjabi, Pashto, Sindhi, Saraiki, and Urdu.

Besides being the official business language along with English, Urdu is also a national language of Pakistan.

Nigeria

Some of you may be surprised that Nigeria takes seventh place on the list of the biggest countries in the world.

With around 206 million inhabitants, this most populous African country has the third youngest population worldwide. Almost half of the population in Nigeria is the age of 18.

Nigeria is a founding member of the African Union, and its economy is a leader on the African continent.

Nigeria is a former British colony, so the official language until these days remained English.

Besides English, there are 525 different languages used in Nigeria. Some of the major ones are Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Fulfulde.

As you see, English can help you communicate with the locals. However, the beauty of other languages spoken in Nigeria is unmeasurable, so we highly recommend getting to know them better.

Bangladesh

With a population of around 164 million people, Bangladesh takes eighth place as one of the biggest countries worldwide.

If someone asks you, what would you say about Bangladesh?

Besides located in South Asia, and sharing a border with India, Bangladesh is, very likely, the most important cultural and historical heritage. It is also one larger part of the Bengal region.

In ancient times, it was notable for trades, contacts with the Roman Empire, and export of silk and muslin to the Middle East.

Even though the country is still struggling with poverty and corruption, it is one of the leading economically growing countries and one of the members of the Next Eleven countries.

Bangladesh is the only country in the world created based on ethnicity and language. The Bengali language is spoken by 98% of the population, making it the most homogenous country in the world.

Russia

The name makes you imagine a very cold winter and you, sitting by the fireplace covered with a blanket, learning Russian with fairytales.

Even though it is far the largest country by size, with almost 145 million by population, however, it takes the ninth place.

The country rich with history and culture, home to 11 different time zones, and the place where you can only imagine to be so cold and enjoy your life.

The official language, Russian, is not only spoken in Russia, but also in other, mainly neighboring countries, such as Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Ukraine, and others. It means that if you want to learn the language, besides practicing with tutors, you can communicate with people in several different countries as well.

Mexico

This trip can be exhausting, can’t it? Traveling from the east to the west and then vice versa. And just when you think you can rest, we have to go to the west again.

But this time, we are going to Mexico.

Even though with 128 million inhabitants Mexico is the tenth most populated country in the world, it, undoubtedly, is the number one most colorful.

There’s no need to explain how fascinating Mexican heritage, history, and culture are or how impressive and one of the easiest languages to learn is their official language, the Spanish language. But, what we do have to mention is to give this country a chance and meet its amazing nature and people.
