I'm sure you have dreamed of hopping on a plane and traveling the world for months at a time. But the world has a way of making that seem far fetched. You do your research and see the astronomical prices of plane tickets kills that dream in a second.

I am someone who has managed to make a living traveling the world. That right there should prove to you that it's not impossible. A 6-month backpacking trip through Europe doesn't have to cost you your life savings. But if you ever want to consider it and can speak another language. I want to show you careers in language and travel.

What Are My Options?

I'm glad you asked! In 2021 the world is your office. Here are ways that you can take advantage of it.

Language Teacher

Online teachers can earn between $6-$25 an hour. As long as you have reliable internet, headphones, and a good laptop, you're good to go. You can pick your schedule, so work as little or as much as you want to. Disclaimer for this one, a majority of teaching companies require a minimum of a bachelor's degree.

You can also teach English at public and private schools in different countries. The TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) is a fast-growing industry with many opportunities. Contracts range between 6-months to 1 year. If you want to settle down for a while in another country, this is for you. To get started, you need to earn your TEFL certification. Most countries require a bachelor's degree. The highest paying countries are Japan, China, and Korea.

Translator

The translator industry is worth millions and is always looking for fresh voices. You can become a translator (by getting a certification) at the local or international level. You can translate for the government, military, companies, or create subtitles for movies and TV shows.

Travel Writer

Do you enjoy writing? Become a freelance writer or a blogger. It can take you all over the world. You can write travel guides, rate tour companies, or create a travel blog. To get your foot in the door, start by contributing to smaller travel blogs. That momentum will pick up over time, and companies will start noticing you. It's 100% remote work, which means you have freedom and flexibility.

Hospitality Industry

You can travel the world by becoming a flight attendant, cruise ship worker, or hotel worker. The tourism industry is massive in a lot of countries. If you have great people skills and are bilingual, this might be a fantastic option for you.

International Aid Worker

Are you passionate about helping the less fortunate? You can make a difference in the world by becoming an aid worker. You'll work in parts of the world that have experienced war, famine, or natural disasters. A lot of aid programs are for volunteering, but you do receive housing and a living stipend. There are also ones that do pay a full salary depending on your experience. Here are a few program options:

  • Peace Crops
  • UNICEF
  • Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO)
  • United Nations

Work Exchanges

The last option is more out of the box. Did you know you can do a work exchange for food and accommodation? You can either work on a farm or a hostel for a few months and stay at that place for free. It's a great way to gain skills, make connections, and live with the locals. You can learn more through the following organizations:

  • Workaway
  • Gooverseas
  • Interexchange
  • Worldbackpackers

There are so many options to travel and work with or without a college degree. All you need is passion and a language or two under your belt.
