Did you know that emojis can help you to learn a language? Yep. Those funny little pictures that you often find on instant messaging programs. Here are a few of the ways that they can help you to learn a foreign language.

Translation

Did you know that some people believe that it is better to learn a language through picture association than it is through the direct translation of a word?

Some people find that giving their target word and the matching emoji is better for helping them to store the image in their mind. This is because they can practice image association as opposed to word association. It really helps to get you thinking in a language.

Let's give an example.

In Swedish, the word for sad is 'ledsen'. Now, rather than learn that it means 'sad' you would associate the word ledsen with the ":(" emoji. It may seem a little bit odd, but we promise you that it is a technique that works!

With flashcards

Some people find it incredibly beneficial to stick some emojis on flashcards and then try to recall the word. If you are following the tip that we gave you before, then you will find that this is going to be easy to do. If you haven't, then at least it will start to get your brain thinking in a slightly different way when you are trying to recall those words.

The great thing about emojis is that there is now so many of them out there that you could easily make an entire sentence up on flashcards that you can try and learn. How cool is that?

When typing in your foreign language

When you are communicating in a foreign language, it is important that you do not slip back into your native one. There may be times that you understand what is being said, but you do not know exactly how to respond, or you feel your response won't convey the right emotion for the situation. This is where emojis can come in handy. They will add a bit more expression to your communications, and it means that you do not have to think too heavily in your native language, which really is the last thing that you want to be doing.

The fantastic thing is that emojis have become a sort-of global language. If you can communicate in emojis, then people are pretty much always going to understand what you mean.

As you can quite clearly see, there are several ways that you can incorporate emojis into your day-to-day life when learning a language. It is likely that the tutor you hire from here at Justlearn may even encourage you to use emojis when learning. It really is a proven technique when learning a new language. All you need to do is start to use them today. We promise you, it will open up a whole host of benefits when it comes to learning. This includes having more communication options available to you!
