How to Learn Two Languages at Once

While it isn't ideal, it is possible to learn two languages at the same time. However, there are a few things that you will want to do to ensure that learning is as efficient as possible.

Should you learn two languages at once?

We do not recommend it unless you really have to. Remember, learning a language takes hundreds and hundreds of hours of practice. If you are learning two languages at once, it is essentially going to take double the time to learn a language. In most cases, our tutors would suggest learning one language to a proficient level and then taking on another one.

Of course, if we really cannot convince you to stick to learning just one language (we know how addictive it can be!) we hope these tips help.

Do not learn two similar languages

It is important that you choose languages that are different from one another. For example, you wouldn't want to learn Swedish and Norwegian alongside one another. Vocabulary and grammar are just too similar. You would find yourself messing up quite a bit. The languages need to be different from one another. For example, Spanish and French can't be learned alongside one another, but Spanish and Hebrew could. We are sure you know what we mean.

Make sure one language is easy and the other difficult

Don't learn two difficult languages. You will really have your work cut out for you if you did that. Keep things simple. Japanese and Spanish would be good. Japanese and Russian? You stand no chance of being able to pick up these languages properly (when you include writing) if you are trying to divide your time between the two.

Practice both languages every day

This is where most people struggle. If you want to learn multiple languages, then they need to be practicing them both each day. Preferably, you would be practicing them for an equal amount of time. So, if you learn one language for an hour, then you need to spend an hour on the other one.

Use a tutor

If you are learning two languages at once, then it is vital that you use a tutor. With one language, it is difficult to learn through independent study. It isn't impossible. It is impossible to learn multiple languages at once with independent study. You will have a limited amount of time. This means that you need to make the most of the time that you have. This means learning in the most efficient way possible. A tutor will help you get there.

Speak the languages as much as possible

This is important when you are learning any language, but when you are learning two at a time, it becomes even more important. Speak the languages out loud as much as you can. This will help 'wire' your brain to see the distinction between the two languages. This may make things a little bit easier for you. Find native speakers to help you out even more.
