Using music to learn a language is a brilliant idea. There are several reasons for this, including:

• Repetitive phrases are absorbed better by the brain

• Musical lyrics tend to be absorbed better by the mind, hence why it is often recommended you 'sing' something to memorize it.

• Lyrics tend to be quite simple

• It is fun

So, how do you learn French with songs? There are a few methods!

Choosing the Song

Before you can learn French with songs, you need to choose an actual song to listen to. Sadly, there aren't as many French songs out there as English songs, but it shouldn't be that hard. If you look at French music charts for the last few years, then you will easily find something that you can listen to.

If you really want to listen to some specific music, then head on over to Spotify. There are several curated playlists of French songs. It is a great way to find music if you enjoy a particular genre. It is much more enjoyable when the music gels with you!

Now, let's talk about the ways that you can learn French with songs.

Passive Learning

With passive learning, you are going to just have the music on in the background. Say, for instance, while you are doing chores around the home, or if you are working.

While passive learning is not going to be as effective as active learning (more on that in a short while), you will be training your ears to the sound of the French language. The whole key to learning a language successfully is to surround yourself with it as much as possible, and this is the route to go down.

In our opinion, if you want to do passive learning properly, then don't just find a decent Spotify playlist. Instead, listen to an actual French radio station. This way you get to hear French lyrics, learn a little bit about French culture, and listen to the radio hosts talk. This means that you have three different ways to learn English here, and you don't have to put in that much effort!

Active Learning

With active learning, you will need to actually interact with the music. This means doing the following. Some or all of them should be fine:

• Read song lyrics and translate anything you do not understand

• Sing the lyrics out loud.

• Keep repeating the song over and over.

The benefit here is that you will be learning the language, and you will also be picking up an almost French accent at the same time.

We encourage you to use a combination of both active and passive learning if you want to learn French with songs.

Conclusion

Remember, if you aren't sure which French songs are good for you, you can always ask your Justlearn French tutor. Remember, all of them are native French speakers, and this means that they will probably have their favorite songs. They will even be able to select something which is perfect for your skill level!
