Melbourne and Cultural Diversity Like Food, Music, and Festivals

Melbourne is a culturally diverse city with people from all over the world.

Indigenous Aboriginal people are the natives of the land. Migrants from different countries, over the past few decades have added to the multicultural aspect of the city. They live in harmony, respecting the heritage and taking pride in the cultural diversity.

I moved to Melbourne in 2017 and I have always loved the benefits of diversity like food, festivals, music, art and celebrations from different cultures.

There are multiple festivals and events around the year for celebration of different cultures like Sri Lankan Festival: Awurudhu Pola, African Music and Cultural Festival, Indian Festival of Diwali, Thai Culture & Food Festival, Antipodes Greek Festival, Italian Pako Festa, Spanish Johnston Street Fiesta, French Festival Francais de Melbourne, Holland Festival Melbourne, Polish Festival, Chinese Lunar New year, New year Fireworks, etc., to name a few. The council of City of Melbourne even has a Multicultural Hub, for people from Melbourne's different cultures to meet, share and learn.

My personal experience

This cultural diversity is part of a daily life. A personal experience - One morning (10 Dec 2019 - thanks to Google Photos), as I walked from my Southbank apartment to my office in Collins St, I was excited and happy to hear the sounds of bansuri and tabla, Indian classical music near Arts Centre. As the event concluded, I walked past a band performing contemporary music near Flinders St station and then along they way near Fed Square, I witnessed a set of people practicing Chinese Tai chi.

Also, Melbourne is a heaven for a foodie who is open to experiencing different cuisines. I love how one can have a dish from a different cuisine any time.

Most of the offices are in Melbourne's CBD, which also has loads of food courts and restaurants with delicious food and reasonable price. My lunches in a week looks like Nasi Lemak from PappaRich (Malaysian) , Souvlaki and Baklava (Greek), Tofu curry rice from Hanaichi (Japanese), Burrito from Guzman Y Gomez (Mexican) and Chicken Biriyani from Chilli India (Indian).

This aspect being one of the many reasons, I love Melbourne. Signing off, a proud Melbournian.
