Your Ultimate Guide to Months of the Year in English

Do you know in which month we celebrate Christmas? 

Mainly in December, yes.

And do you know when is your birthday? Or what month is it today?

Even better, do you know to pronounce the month of your birthday in English?

Learning months in English isn’t as hard as it may seem, on the contrary.

You don’t have to learn the months’ names just by memorizing them. In fact, this way, it is likely that you will start confusing the months. 

To use months in English, you some entertaining ways and learning tools, such as memorizing them by playing games or using flashcard apps.

Anyway, in this post, we will explain to you every month in English and give you some suggestions on how you can learn them in no time.

After reading, if you’ve remembered at least half of them, you can practice using the names of the months with English tutors. If you find some pronunciation difficulties, they can help you.

And now, let’s dive in.

How We Use The Names of The Months in English?

Before we start getting to know the months, it is essential to learn a little bit about the correct writing.

One year consists of twelve months. Months of the year are:

  • January

  • February

  • March

  • April

  • May

  • June

  • July

  • August

  • September

  • October

  • November 

  • December

In English, months are written with capital letters, for example, March, June, October, etc.

When you have to use months in sentences, you usually use them with prepositions. 

Acceptable and correct prepositions we use are ‘in’ and ‘on.’

The preposition ‘in’ is used when there is no specific date. 

Example: I was born in June.

The preposition ‘on’ is used in situations when there is a specific date mentioned.

Example: I was born on June 1, 1985.

Names of The Months in English

Now when you know the basic information about the months, we can start learning the names.

January

Days: 31

Holidays: New Year’s Day, Australia Day, Chinese New Year, Republic day in India

January is the first month of the year. This month is usually connected to new beginnings, positive thinking, a new and fresh start.

In the Northern Hemisphere, January is one of the winter months, where it is, most likely, snowing, so in this part of the world, people usually think about January as the white month, full of children’s joy. In the Southern Hemisphere, on the other hand, January falls in the middle of the summer.

February

Days: 28 or 29

Holidays: Valentine’s Day, President’s day in the USA, Groundhog Day in the USA and Canada, International Mother Language Day

February is the shortest month of the year, no matter if it has 28 or 29 days. Every fourth year, February has 29 days. The last leap year was 2020, where February had 29 days, and the next will be 2024.

Even though there are many holidays in February waiting to be celebrated all around the world, the most favorite one is, undoubtedly, Valentine’s Day. That’s why most people associate this month with hearts, love, and romance.

March

Days: 31

Holidays: St.Patrick’s Day, International Women’s Day, International Earth Day ( also called Sun-Earth Day).

In the Southern Hemisphere, the coming of March means autumn, yellow, brown, and orange leaves falling from the trees. On the other side of the planet, people are welcoming the spring, when nature slowly awakens.

It is also a month that associates a lot of people to the ‘luck of the Irish’ because, in March, one of the favorite celebrated holidays is St.Patrick’s Day.

And we mustn’t forget about one amazing and so lovely holiday, Women’s Day, celebrated on Marth 8th.

April

Days: 30

Holidays: April Fool’s Day, Earth Day, The Beginning of the Ramadan, Easter

In April, the spring has already come. It is the month of many fascinating holidays, and it is a symbol of flowers, nice spring rains, and pastel colors.

April is also the month of important religious holidays, such as Easter in Christians and the beginning of Ramadan in Muslims.

May

Days: 31

Holidays: International Workers’ Day, Star Wars Day, Memorial Day in the USA, Mother’s Day.

The first day of this moths begins with International Workers’ Day celebrated all over the world and remembering the ones who bore all the workers’ injustice in the past.

While in the Northern Hemisphere, May is one of the most joyful months because it slowly turns spring into summer in the Southern Hemisphere in May, autumn ends, and winter approaches.

June

Days: 30

Holidays: Summer Solstice, Father’s Day, Flag Day

Do you feel summer approaching in June? Oh yes, the sea, vacation, and summer holidays are there. Or at least for the people from the Northern Hemisphere. The other part of the planet prepares for skiing and making Snowman.

Did you also know that in June we celebrate the longest day of the year called Summer Solstice?

July

Days: 31

Holidays: Independence Day in the USA, Canada Day.

While in Southern Hemisphere, July is entirely the winter’s month, in the Northern Hemisphere, it is one of the hottest ones. Over three, it is celebrated Bikini’s Day, too.

August

Days: 31

Holidays: Left Hander’s Day, National Melon Day

Even though there are not many holidays in August, the ones that are celebrated are a cute reminder to enjoy ourselves in this last summer month.

Left-handed people, this month is your special day. Do you celebrate it?

September

Days: 30

Holidays: Father’s Day in Australia, Yom Kippur, Oktoberfest.

In many countries all over the world, in September, school begins. It is the end of summer in the Northern part of the planet, so people are mainly trying to enjoy the last beautiful days. On the other side of the planet, people are preparing for the summer and flowers.

Even though it isn’t a classical holiday, at the end of September begins Oktoberfest, the world’s most famous fest of beer in Germany.

Oktober

Days: 31

Holidays: Thanksgiving Day, Halloween, World Smile Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day.

In October, people can’t wait for the last day to come, Halloween. One of the most favorite holidays is celebrated in many countries all over the world.

Still, we have plenty of time to remember this month and associate it with this amazing pumpkin holiday, even to improve our vocabulary with Halloween phrases.

November

Days: 30

Holidays: Thanksgiving Day in the USA, Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead), All Saints’ Day.

The harvest season, when autumn slowly ends, and winter approaches, or at least that’s what is like in the Northern part of the planet. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is the opposite.

One of the worldwide-known holidays celebrated in November is Mexican Dia de los Muertos. It is connected with All Saints’ Day when families gather to pray and remember their dead loved ones.

December

Days: 31

Holidays: Christmas, Hanukkah, New Year’s Eve.

The last month of the year, December is all about the holidays and celebrations. Like in January, we all are full of optimism and hope that next year will be better in every possible way.

The Southern Hemisphere enjoys the summer and the Sun while waiting for the New Year to come. The Northern part enjoys winter, skiing, and delicious winter cookies and hot tea.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, it isn’t so hard to learn the names of the months in English, especially if you have something that associates you, like enjoyable holidays.

Use as many fun ways to help you remember them.o You will be surprised when you reality that not only did you learned the months’ names, but you’ve also memorized many other words.
