Learning a language can be hard, but thanks to the internet and the invention of mobile apps, it is now way easier.
No matter what language you want to learn there is an app out there for it, let's have a look at 2023’s top 3 of the best foreign language apps that you should try.
One of the best for learning multiple languages and includes some almost extinct languages like Hawaiian and Navajo. The best part of Duolingo is that it is free to use, although there is a paid subscription to Duolingo Plus, which has some perks, the choice is entirely up to you.
It is a really fun way to learn and practice a language with its bright and game-like style. With a “Streak” kind of feature that motivates you to keep going with learning and practicing a language daily.
The courses on Duolingo are broken into topics, and you must complete the lessons to unlock more. These topics cover health, hanging out with friends, animals, and more.
The game side of Duolingo is that you are limited to 5 hearts a day, which counts towards your learning and when you make a mistake, you lose 1. When you lose all 5 hearts, you must either wait for the timer to regain 1 heart or purchase them with the gems you get in the game.
You get these gems by playing, completing lessons, or for random chests that you may come across.
This is where the subscription comes in handy as you can get rid of the limits and the ads.
If you are looking for a more online school-based way of learning, then Babbel is for you. It has an easy layout to learn a new language without it being overwhelming or boring.
This app is paid subscription based, but registering is free and so is your first lesson.
Each lesson shows you translations with different variations of words or phrases and you get to see new words that you are learning and how they are used in everyday conversations. These lessons are about 15 minutes long and you can practice wherever you are.
For the time being, Babbel offers 14 languages, English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Dutch, Turkish, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Indonesian.
The app drops has a fun, bright and colorful layout that’s great for those who are visual learners.
Similar to Duolingo you can learn many languages like Tagalog, Turkish, and Irish, with 3 different premium subscription methods (Monthly, Yearly, or Lifetime). The free version does have its limitations, like a daily cap of 5–minute learning sessions and ads.
You can check your statistics after completing lessons, from your correct answers to your wrong ones and also the words you’ve learned.
This isn’t an app to learn grammar or to practice speaking and pronunciation, but a vocabulary builder.
When joining for the first time you do get 1 week to test the premium version.
A forum-based app (and site!) where language learners can get answers and corrections from real people.
You can ask things like “how do you say _” or “how to pronounce_”, as well as general questions about the language and the country. There is also a search button, in case your question has been answered before or to find out other things.
This app has both a paid and free version but a free account allows you to have access to most of HiNative’s features.
These language learning apps are great no matter what level of language learner you are, and if you are learning for fun or not. Apps can be very helpful to practice and learn new things in your target language, so why not download one and try them today?
