This question is popular among people who learn English because each student tries to as many words as possible. In fact, no one will give you an exact answer to this question because there is no answer. If you look at different statistics, you may be surprised because the numbers may be different. This is because there are several methods of counting words. One counts only words, the other count words and word forms, the third count something else. However, an organization has been established in the United States to monitor the spread of English words. It is called the "Global Language Monitor" (GLM). This organization is responsible for word count and monitoring the emergence of new language entities. GLM works with common dictionaries, as well as monitors the emergence of new words in the media, social networks, and literature. According to the latest data from this organization, the English language has 1,019,729 words. Moreover, GLM also provides other interesting data. A new word in English appears every 98 minutes. If you count it by days, you get about 15 words per day. Another interesting fact is that in order for a word to become "new", it must be noticed at least 25,000 times in literature, the media, and on the internet. Only after that, it is recorded in the English dictionary.
