A few languages are spoken in Taiwan. Taiwanese Mandarin is spoken by most of the population and is similar to standard Mandarin spoken in the People's Republic of China (PRC), with some different vocabulary and with a distinct written system. Taiwanese Hokkien is also spoken by about 70% of the population. A few other smaller languages are spoken as well, including Taiwanese Hakka, and groups indigenous to the island speak a number of Formosan languages.
