According to an article: In Old English, “go” was “gan”, and its past tense was “eode”. By the 1400s, “eode” was replaced by “went”, formerly the past tense of “wenden” (ancestor of modern “wend”, which, after losing its own irregular plural, became regular). In dialects of Northern England and Scotland, “gaed” became the past tense for a time; however, the standard dialect came from southern England (particularly the area around London) and won out.
