Why is the plural of 'prefix' prefixes and not 'prefices'?

The Latin word it is derived from is praefixum, and the plural of that is not praefices, it's praefixa. Since no Latin plural form pr(a)efices exists, the English plural form is just made by combining the singular form prefix and the normal English plural suffix -(e)s: prefixes.
